From Open Fields to Communications: How Kristina Villa is Reclaiming the Future of Farming

10.12.2025

Kristina Villa’s story is one of grit, purpose, and connection. Growing up in an urban neighborhood where food insecurity was part of daily life, she never imagined she’d end up leading a movement to protect farmland. But that’s exactly what she’s doing as the co-founder of the Farmers Land Trust.

Her path wasn’t traditional. With a background in media and communications, Kristina was drawn into agriculture not through wellness trends or sustainability buzzwords—but through a real need to address food access. Work in food relief organizations opened her eyes to deeper systemic issues, and soon, she and her husband were stewarding 70 acres of farmland to help fix them.

Today, the Farmers Land Trust is tackling one of agriculture’s biggest challenges: keeping land in the hands of those who work it. By helping farmers gain secure access and long-term tenure, Kristina and her team are building a more equitable and resilient future for farming communities across the country.

Storytelling sits at the center of that mission. The Trust amplifies the voices of aging farmers, new stewards, and community innovators—showing what’s possible when people invest in the land and in each other. Kristina’s belief is simple but powerful: stories can spark change.

Her journey proves that one person, armed with empathy and persistence, can bridge the gap between urban and rural, between awareness and action.
