Engaging Businesses in Climate Solutions: An Interview with Jeff Marks
In a recent episode of the PR Bunker Podcast, host Don Martelli sat down with Jeff Marks, Executive Director of Climate Work Maine, to discuss the organization's mission and the critical role businesses play in addressing climate change. Jeff's journey from a corporate lobbyist to a leader in sustainability offers unique insights into the challenges and opportunities in the current political climate.
From Lobbyist to Sustainability Leader
Jeff Marks' career path is anything but conventional. "I was a corporate lobbyist in Washington, DC, and was even voted 'Clean Air Villain of the Year' twice," Jeff recalls with a chuckle. His transition to leading a nonprofit focused on sustainability was driven by a desire to be proactive rather than reactive. "Once I saw the connection between environmental improvement and economic prosperity, the transition was easy," he explains.
The Role of Businesses in Climate Solutions
Climate Work Maine was born out of the pandemic, a time Jeff describes as a "dress rehearsal for what's coming on climate." The organization brings together business leaders to tackle climate challenges collaboratively. "We see climate change as both an environmental and economic issue," Jeff emphasizes. "Businesses are uniquely positioned to drive solutions and create new opportunities."
Challenges in the Current Political Climate
Navigating the political landscape is no small feat for climate-focused nonprofits. "The focus on climate has changed considerably in Washington, DC," Jeff notes. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic. "No matter what policy is happening in DC, the world is moving toward cleaner energy and increased sustainability."
Innovative Approaches and Networking Opportunities
Climate Work Maine offers a network for businesses to share sustainability practices and learn from one another. "We're a network first and foremost," Jeff says. "Small businesses can engage in sustainability without extensive resources by tapping into the expertise of larger companies."
Preserving Maine's Natural Resources
For Jeff, the work is personal. "I grew up in a small town in northern Maine, surrounded by natural beauty," he shares. "Preserving Maine's natural resources is crucial, and businesses have a vital role to play in this effort."
Looking Ahead
Jeff's vision for Climate Work Maine is ambitious. "Let's make Maine a leader in climate solutions and then replicate this model in other states," he envisions. "Businesses supporting climate action can move the needle on the federal level."
